Halloween was Frank Zappa’s favourite holiday and by
1977 his Halloween shows were legendary. Recorded
live at The Palladium in NYC, Zappa performed six
shows 28‐31 October. Four shows were filmed and
resulted in Zappa’s movie Baby Snakes

Deze gelimiteerde box (5000 ex.) bevat een stick met
alle tracks in hoge audio-kwaliteit, opbergd

Warning/Guarantee the
guy with the horns and pointed stick conducts his
business. Dat stond op de gesimuleerde sticker op het
album waarop Zappa de moeders der preventie ontmoet. Trek
dit even door naar Halloween the Costume Box Set, Zappa;
the guy with the stick? Die horns zijn natuurlijk de
blazers, maar daar is er in deze doos niet een van.
Bob Dylan wist al in de jaren zestig
dat de tijden aan verandering onderhevig waren. Zo ben ik
nog 'opgevoed’ met vinyl, 45 en 33 toeren en vervolgend de
cd. Heerlijk dat ik van dat vinyl af was. Nu komt het om
nostalgische redenen weer terug, want als je dingen
download of ergens in een wolk hebt hangen heb je niks om
te fetisjen natuurlijk. Ik heb genoeg om te fetisjen, maar
heb daarom niks met allerlei audiobestanden op ‘iets’.
In de experimentele hoek, elektronica,
werd al volop geëxperimenteerd met alternatieve
geluidsdragers. Zo ligt er hier ook een stukje karton dat
ik in mijn pc kan doen en wordt het uiteinde als een
usb-stick gelezen. Mijn audio-set lust dat soort dingen
niet. Ik mag mijzelf omschrijven als ‘een luisteraar naar
muziek’ en ga er dan ook echt voor zitten. Muziek is
altijd rondom mij, maar als ik luister, is dat bewust.
Downloads, sticks, pc-bestanden vallen
allemaal buiten die categorie, want die moet ik ‘elders’
beluisteren en dat luistert niet fijn, prettig, optimaal.
Een luisterstoel is anders dan een bureaustoel en dat
luistert ook anders.
Dit hierboven is de ouverture voor de
kostuumbox, mét masker, cape en stick. De box zelf, masker
en cape staan bij allerlei deviante, muzikale zaken zoals
een kunststof radio, een houten roadbox (die ja), een
kunststof juwelendoos, een alternatieve lichtbak en andere
creatieve uitingen van muziekopbergconstructies. De stick
ligt naast het stukje multikabel uit de UMRK-studio.
Museaal gezien allemaal in orde zo.
Muzikaal gezien is het een ander
verhaal. De 3cd-versie trek ik vaker uit de kast om te
beluisteren. Voor de stick-versie moet ik mijn pc
aanzetten of iets op mijn mobiel zetten. Mijn mobiel is
niet mijn favoriete muziekluisterding en mijn pc is mijn
muziekwerkding, waarop ik onder anderen deze site en die
van de LemonTree maak. Zo af en toe klik ik eens op de
Halloweensessie van de stick. Ik heb netjes de foute track
omgeruild voor de goede en na één keer luisteren
geparkeerd in het mapje bij de rest.
Het hele verhaal komt uiteindelijk
neer op hoe je staat in muziek en wat je wil, dingen om
vast te houden, voelen, lezen, bekijken of virtuele zaken
waarop je geen houvast hebt. De eerste zie ik als
muziekliefhebber, de tweede als audiopassanten.
Ik snap ook dat het niet te doen is om
een 16cd-set uit te brengen, alhoewel…. Kijk eens naar
Pink Floyd met hun Early Years megadoos met 17 cd’s.
Prachtig, stijlvol gedaan, geen seconde spijt van die
aankoop.
Zappa was een meester in collages
maken. In elk interview met hem – over dit onderwerp –
lees je dat lp’s en cd’s kwalitatief veel beter waren
nadat hij ze honderd keer of meer veranderd had. De vraag
is dan of zo’n hele concertreeks datzelfde effect teweeg
brengt. Ik denk van niet, de hoeveelheid is overweldigend.
Teveel om te behappen. Het duurt jaren voordat je er iets
zinnigs van kan vinden of je het je allemaal eigen gemaakt
hebt. Wat daarbij een rol speelt is dat veel hetzelfde is
waardoor alles door elkaar gaat lopen en de ene Discoboy
niet meer te scheiden is van de andere.
The Costume Box set is een soort must
als verstokt Zappanaat, maar of ik er nu echt blij mee
ben? Ik weet het nog steeds niet… Ik voel mij in die zin
steeds meer als die oude rock mensen uit de binnenhoes van
Ruben & the Jets: “Just a bunch of old men with
rock & roll clothes on setting around (in the
studio), mumbling about the good old days. Ten years
from now you'll be sitting around with you friends
someplace doing the same thing if there's anything left
to sit on.” |
