‘Beat the Boots’ is een serie cd-uitgaven
waarbij Zappa een aantal populaire bootlegs
zelf uitbracht. De makers konden daar weinig
tegenin brengen. Nu verdiende Zappa er
bovendien zelf nog wat aan. Hij nam ze
één-opéen over, inclusief ‘artwork’.

Met deze
tijdslijn-geziene laatste release in de Beat the Boots-rij
maakt Zappa in het intro duidelijk dat hij het niet heeft
op bootlegs en waarom. Een voorbode van de reeks
uitgegeven op het daarvoor opgezette Foo-Eee Records van
Rhino. De conversatie voor KLOS-FM (1981) gaat als volgt:
FZ: … no, it's not. As a matter of fact, the bootleg
problem as it applies to the work that I do is very much
out of control. And so the FBI is working on it for us.
And we've supplied them with examples of all the various
things that we've found that've been bootlegged. And
they've been checkin' up on . . . tryin' to find out where
the things are coming from. Because as far as my material
goes it's a very big business.
B. Mitchel Reed (de interviewer): Really?
FZ: I don't think that it's the work of just a couple of
individual guys who went out and made a record for fun.
It's some, one or two people who are releasing vast
quantities of material. Last year twelve bootlegs, in the
last year!
B. Mitchel Reed: Phew. I wasn't aware of . . .
FZ: And one of them has all the songs on the next album
that's coming out in September. They've already got the
stuff recorded live in concert before I can even release
it on a record. And that makes me mad."
En dat zet een bootlegger zelf op zijn bootlegs… Schuldig
tot het tegendeel bewezen is.
‘As An Am’, een woordspeling op S&M? bevat een
samenraapsel van diverse concerten, maar wel steeds
dezelfde band. In ‘Young & Monde’ laat Zappa zijn
gitaar flink tekeergaan, net als in de andere stukken. Het
geluid is soms plotseling beter, maar het blijft behelpen.
De samensteller hield blijkbaar van gitaarsolo’s, want dat
is het verborgen thema van deze set.
De stukken uit het Palladium, de laatste drie, hebben we
inmiddels officieel. Dat helpt tenminste echt mee.
En verder? Het is dat Zappa dit ding zelf uitgebracht
heeft, dan mag het, want die solo's zijn echt niet
misselijk. Dat dan weer wel...
